Blog 5

Another quiet day indoors today, mainly looking at job stuff on the internet and attempting to take Sunderland to Premier League glory on FIFA 2009 on the Wii. There's still a lot of snow on the ground and not an awful lot of motivation for going outside. Fortunately the rest of my family successfully made it off on their respective journeys and thus I am home alone. This afternoon despite being tired of the London gig scene I procured a ticket to see one of my favourite bands Alkaline Trio play an intimate show at the Camden Underworld on 25th January. The gig sold out in four minutes and managing to get a ticket for an event so heavily in demand is always a nice feeling. They've evolved over the years from being a brilliantly angsty, miserable punk band (their debut record Goddamnit! is the best example of this, listen to it on Spotify if you have it) into a sort of goth rock outfit and have continued to produce really good albums. Anyway, it's something to look forward to and there aren't many things that fit in that category in my life at the minute. That sounds more depressing that I intended. But I feel my life is pretty much on hiatus at the minute. More on that in another blog I expect.

And there will be other blogs. Loads and loads of them. On all sorts of subjects. One of my resolutions for the upcoming year is to write a lot more. I have set myself the hugely unrealistic target of writing 365 blogs this year, aiming to write roughly 400-600 words per post. This is partly to semi-emulate the stand-up comedian Richard Herring, who has written a blog every day for the past seven years. Which is very impressive, even considering that he sometimes puts them up in blocks of three. Herring embarked on his blog, Warming Up, because he thought it would motivate him to write more stand up on a daily basis. I hope this will have a similar effect on me and my comedy writing. My process at the minute is just to keep a notepad by my bed and scribble nonsense in it when I'm about to go to sleep. To write anywhere near the region of 365 would be great, although I'm already behind. I'm sure it'll get to the point that on 1st May, I'll need to write fifty blogs to keep up.
