Blog 9

My mundane numbering system for blog posts that have no particular subject has returned. Hooray. I am currently listening to Status Quo on Spotify, for no other reason than I'm amused by the idea of someone doing a massive stand up show and coming on to 'Whatever You Want'. People have apparently fought and died in world wars for my right to do this. I have a better Spotify recommendation in the form of 'My Dinosaur Life', the new album from the pop-punk band Motion City Soundtrack. I first saw the band in 2004 and they've been a regular fixture in my gig calendar and on my MP3 player ever since. They've deservedly grown hugely in popularity since then and their major label debut is a belter with some great pop songs.

In making a resolution to blog a lot more, I had forgotten that quite often there aren't enough things in my life worth writing about. It's alright for Richard Herring, with his constant work and minor celebrity status. Speaking of Herring, he was on BBC4 last night as part of their highlights of Nine Lessons and Carols For Godless People, the atheist extravaganza hosted by Robin Ince. I'm very much a layman when it comes to scientific matters but I enjoyed the show, particularly as it veered away from the smugness that is often associated with atheism. I saw two Ince shows last year, Bleeding Heart Liberal and Robin Ince v.s The Moral Majority. The latter was the better of the two because his themes were broader, with a sizable focus on the idiocy of certain sections of the media that I can certainly relate to. The scientific content of BHL meant a lot of it flew over my head. But he's hugely prolific and very passionate about his subject matter and deserves to be applauded. His title of 'Most Successful Royal Holloway Comedy Alumnus' is not under any threat whatsoever.

On that subject, my next gig is the RAG (which stands for Raise and Give, I believe, so all the entrance money goes to charity) Comedy Club at Tommys Bar at the aforementioned university this coming Tuesday the 26th. It's always nice to go back and the audiences are normally pretty friendly. I'll be doing almost entirely new stuff, which has in recent times been a disastrous strategy at my gigs. Perhaps this time my luck will turn.
