Never Had A Drink That I Didn't Like, Got A Taste Of You, Threw Up All Night

I'm exhausted and all I've really done this evening is watch football. The fact that big Manchester United still have the ability to make me so nervous is something I'm deeply ashamed of. Still, I was nonetheless delighted by United overturning a first leg deficit to beat Manchester City 3-1 on the night and 4-3 on aggregate with a dramatic late goal from the in form Wayne Rooney. The second half was brilliant to watch.

I'm in the middle of a busy week by my standards. On Monday night I headed over to Camden Town to see Alkaline Trio's gig at the Underworld. It was a pleasure to see them in such a small venue and it was comfortably the best of the three gigs I've seen from them, with a good mix of material from all their studio albums. From the sound of the three new songs the band played, they're going back to their melodic punk roots with their upcoming record, This Addiction. It's out next month and I'm looking forward to hearing it. However, I'm increasingly feeling (even at the age of 21) that I'm getting too old for this shit. Live performances are no longer as exciting as they were when I was 16. I think I'll stop attending shows soon, though I suspect there will always be exceptions.

Tuesday night saw me going down to Egham to perform stand up at Royal Holloway. Mercifully, my prediction from the last blog proved inaccurate as I didn't die on my arse. I had a solid gig, although I struggled to get to grips with some of my new material and it affected the performance a bit. But not too badly and obviously it'll become more familiar over time. I was also delighted by the audience numbers which I think were around 60-70 crammed into the not especially large space of Tommys Bar. Three guys from the Royal Holloway Comedy Society made their stand up debuts. Mani Ahmed, Thomas Henderson and Ben Heridge were all great and displayed a remarkable amount of on-stage confidence. Well done to them.

My next gig comes this Saturday at a Laughing Horse New Act of the Year 2010 heat at the Goat Tavern in Green Park, having been moved from the Cricketers in Kingston. Fortunately the show is now much less of a pain in the arse to get to. I've talked about the nature of stand up competitions in another blog and they aren't the best gigs to do. Undoubtedly, your ego gets dented a bit if for whatever reason you don't make it through to the next round. But there are so many factors beyond your control that could potentially affect the outcome that it's more important to focus on performing as best you can.
