Blog 11

An eventful weekend. I went to the Goat Tavern in Green Park on Saturday to perform my Laughing Horse New Act of the Year heat. I was unhappy with the conditions of the gig, namely that Laughing Horse had oversold a relatively small upstairs room and so the acts were asked to stay downstairs until they were required to perform. It's unacceptable to me to not allow the acts to watch the gig, as this allows them to gauge the audience and see what has and hasn't worked for the other performers on the bill. I snuck in to watch the second half anyway and thought I had a good gig, hitting the large majority of punchlines. My performances are improving and on balance I thought I deserved to go through. The factors beyond my control that I mentioned a couple of blogs ago worked against me though and unfortunately it wasn't to be.

On Sunday, I watched Manchester United play Arsenal, one of the fiercest rivalries in football (at the least in the Premier League era starting in the early Nineties). The amount of time I devote to football is quickly becoming unjustifiable. But matches like yesterday remind me why I fell in love with the sport as United ran out 3-1 winners. They outplayed Arsenal for the overwhelming majority of the match. Wayne Rooney's goal was the finest example of counter attacking football I've seen for a very long time. The man is one of the best footballers in the world and in the form of his life, which bodes well for when England's World Cup hype machine goes into overdrive in the summer. Fantastic stuff. I'll stop talking about football soon, I promise.

After the match, I went to the Hammersmith Apollo to watch Billy Connolly. It's not very often that you get to see a true legend of comedy in the flesh and he was great. I'll review the show properly in my next blog. Sticking with the subject of comedy, The Cleveland Show (a Family Guy spin-off) starts tonight at 10pm on E4. I questioned whether the character Cleveland Brown would be able to carry a whole series but I've seen the first few episodes online and the show's made a promising start. There are similarities in style with its parent show although there's less use of FG's trademark cutaway gags and more of a focus on plot. I recommend giving it a watch.
