Reckless Moment

There's a lot of stuff to catch up on. James McPhun and I headed up to the midlands on 8th March to gig at Reckless Moment, the new act/new material night held at Robbins Well in Leamington Spa. The plan was then to do the Court Jester Comedy Night in Hampstead on our return to London, but that was pulled due to a complete lack of audience. It's pretty soul destroying when that happens, particularly when you've been travelling all day but such is the life of a stand up on the bottom rungs of the ladder.

Leamington Spa was James' hometown when he studied at Warwick University. Having visited, I'm pretty envious. With a considerable number of pubs and takeaways and generally a lot more stuff to do, the place seems like student heaven in comparison to Egham. Although I'm not difficult to please. Anywhere that sells Aspalls cider on tap is officially brilliant in my book. Also great is the Reckless Moment gig itself. The comedians perform in a little alcove downstairs at Robbins Well and the audience are all huddled round, making for a nice intimate atmosphere.

The lineup was also very strong. I went on after Adam Staunton, a high level performer who had an excellent gig with a very slick, mainstream style set. I probably suffered slightly for the fact that my style meant that the energy in the room wouldn't be maintained. I had a subdued start after I brought back some old material but gradually brought the crowd onside (who had taken a while to warm up at the beginning of the show) and finished strongly. Generally pleased with the way it went after largely being met with apathy at the Emergency gig last time.

Annoyingly, in the battle of 'Best Stand Up Comedian In Biggin Hill' that seems to exist predominantly in our own minds, James came out on top. This was in spite of his relaxed approach to pre-gig preparation, ie writing a few bullet points down while I read through my set, typed and printed in its entirety. He stormed it on his old stomping ground with a lot of great material that was intelligent without being alienating, if I ignore some of his scatological tendencies.

I enjoyed the night a great deal, big thanks to Dean Love for giving me the spot and Nick Gibson for giving us a place to crash. My next gig is probably going to be the Royal Holloway Comedy Night on 22nd March. The event hasn't been advertised in the Student Union's Comm Card which is distributed around the university to tell students what is going on. Previous attendances to the night have been excellent but I assume there will be a dropoff because of this. Still, the advertising starts here, through a blog that nobody at Royal Holloway reads. Hopefully I can recruit The Best Stand Up Comedian In Biggin Hill to headline the bill. Though I have just realised I am yet to tell him about this.
