Sigh

There's very little to report today other than more footballing woe. The combination of Sunderland losing a must win game at home to Aston Villa 0-4 and Burnley getting a shock 1-0 victory over Manchester City has pushed us closer to the trap door. We've been hugely fortuitious over the past couple of seasons and I think today's debacle will ultimately consign us to the second tier. The Guardian's excellent Football Weekly podcast described us as "playing Russian Roulette on an annual basis but adding an additional bullet to the chamber each year". Our luck has run out.

It's the humiliating manner of these defeats that gets to me. Aston Villa have been absolutely dreadful all season. Prior to today, they had scored four goals away from home all season. This afternoon they managed to match that total within a solitary half of pitiful defending. People were throwing their season tickets at Gus Poyet and frankly I'm unsurprised. Burnley meanwhile, showed all of the attributes we lack. Guts, determination, drive, effort and desire. I hope I'm wrong but it'll be Sunderland to go down along with QPR and Leicester City. To prolong my agony still further, I have to watch Manchester United tomorrow.

On an unrelated note, I was sad to hear about a fire at the Battersea Arts Centre yesterday that destroyed the main hall they've been renovating for so long. Fortunately, all the staff were safe and they've been able to reopen for a couple of performances elsewhere in the building this evening. I've been there on a number of occasions and know how important it is as a hub of comedy and theatre. Earlier in the week, I had booked a couple of tickets for Daniel Kitson previewing his new show "Polyphony" next Saturday. I very much hope that the BAC's programme can continue in some form and that they gain the funding required to recover from their misfortune.
