Edinburgh #4

I had my first spot at the festival yesterday, doing ten minutes at Camden Comedy Club's lunchtime showcase at Whistlebinkies. It was a decent sized crowd and I was generally happy with the response. A solid set but not quite on top of my game. The punters were very kind about it afterwards though, a nice start to the day. I'm back there tomorrow.

Save for my traditional trip to Jimmy Chung's chinese buffet, I sat the rest of the afternoon out. At 7, I took in Ian Smith's show, hopeful to avoid the disruption from punters that blighted my experience last year. We're now both wondering if I'm some sort of curse, after one particularly belligerent punter interrupted the show to leave in the most conspicuous manner possible while acting very aggressively towards Ian in the process.

I will return to this subject in a later blog because I don't really have the time to write what I would like to today. But Ian pulled the show back round,  a show that up until that point had demonstrated his fine improvisational talent and intelligence as a writer and performer.

Onwards to Tom Toal's show then, which was something of a greatest hits show from the affable Bexleyheath storyteller. It was a bit more low key than I've seen from him in the past but I find him enjoyable to listen to. Him and his family have had something of a turbulent year by all accounts, I hope for happier circumstances for the Toals by the time his next show rolls around.

Kyle Kinane's Ghost Pizza Party featured not the supernatural or the foodstuff or a social gathering,  but a number of entertaining stories from his recent life. They were somewhat lurid and bleak, but evocatively described by this gruff American. I suspect I probably laughed more than anyone else in the room at, apropos of nothing,  "I punched a dalmatian in the face".

Finally, the raucous late night fun of Pappy's Secret Dudes Society, a 2 hour early morning romp of sketches and songs, with fine appearances from Max and Ivan, Nish Kumar and Katherine Ryan amongst others. I've been to many post midnight Edinburgh shows and that was one of the best.
