Power Rangers

In Angel Grove, 5 teenagers discover multicoloured coins in a mine. After they survive a collision with a train, they realise they have superpowers. They stumble upon a base underground where they meet Alpha 5 (Bill Hader) who introduces them to Zordon (Bryan Cranston) a voice in a wall who was once the original leader of the Power Rangers and informs them that they must now carry on his legacy as a team. The five must train to stop Rita Repulsa (Elizabeth Banks) who has designs on the Zeo Crystal somewhere in the town.

Yeah. The Power Rangers need to stop a witch from stealing a crystal because she can destroy the world with it, or something. Don't focus too much on the plot with this one because it isn't really there. The Guardian's review of this said it benefits from lowered expectations and I think that's fair. Save for a terribly misjudged joke about bull masturbation early doors, there's very little to actively get offended by here. The dialogue is clunky in places but nothing compared to the product placement. Whoever wrote the line "Krispy Kreme is the source of life" should be fired. Ideally out of a cannon.

It's somewhat disappointing that its 85 minutes into the two hour running time before we actually see the characters "suit up" and the climatic battle underwhelms. I would have preferred more fighting and less focus on the issues of moody teenagers who belatedly learn the importance of friendship. But there's fun to be had along the way. Certainly Banks has fun in a ludicrously over the top performance, whilst the five young actors mostly acquit themselves well. R J Cyler as Billy/Blue Ranger is the most impressive, providing a performance of genuine warmth and charm.

As a stop gap release for its target audience before heavier hitters later in the year, I'm sure it'll do a certain amount of business but its difficult to make a case for rebooting Power Rangers in a Marvel world. The creators say there are already plans for "a 6 film arc". I can say categorically that that won't happen.
