Kitson

I headed to Angel on Thursday night to attend a Daniel Kitson work in progress gig at The Bill Murray, London's recently established "community centre" for comedy. I think that's how I heard it described anyway. Essentially it seems to be a place where comedians of all levels can put on shows and develop ideas, which I'm sure you'll agree is a terrific idea. Predictably it was rammed to capacity, as Kitson gigs invariably are.

Kitson is performing "Something Other Than Everything" at the Roundhouse from 12th-29th July at 9pm. I sense that Kitson does much of his writing on projects in the month before the finished article is performed. I therefore wouldn't be surprised if the show is radically different from what I saw on Thursday evening. It might have been me, but it felt like a more subdued gig than I'm used to from him. Part of the joy of Kitson work in progress shows is him riffing off the audience, getting sidetracked and digressing from the central themes of the piece.

This was very much a "let's get down to business" affair, using an island off the coast of Scotland and an encounter outside a popular restaurant near his home as means of discussing his current feelings about the world. The events of the past year have clearly weighed on his mind and this looks to have a more political outlook than some of his other work. He of course retains a keen eye for a turn of phrase and a killer observation. Even if you may not agree with his logic that vegetarians are worse than meat eaters, the argument is both compelling and hilarious.

Unsurprisingly for a WIP, the narrative threads haven't yet been tied together but I'm very much looking forward to the finished article next month.
