Wonder Woman
Diana (Gal Gadot) is one of the race of Amazon women who live on Themyscira whose duty is to protect mankind from the god of War, Ares. A plan piloted by Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) crashes off the shore and he is pursued by German soldiers. After the Amazons battle the Germans, he reveals that the First World War is taking place and that he is an Allied spy. Diana believes that if she follows Steve to the war, she will be able to find and destroy Ares.
I saw this film on Sunday night. I'm struggling to string any of my thoughts together into coherent paragraphs because I'm tired and there's too much distance between the write up and the screening. So here are some stray observations as the AV Club would call them.
1. Gal Gadot is very good as our titular hero and at expressing how she comes to terms with a world she knows very little of and learns of the good and bad of humanity at large.
2. She has good chemistry with Chris Pine who also puts in a solid showing.
3. Robin Wright is in this for a bit and Robin Wright is great.
4. Lucy Davis also has a fun role as Steve's secretary.
5. There's a No Man's Land sequence that's genuinely badass.
6. The ending is a bit superhero movie by numbers but the film had built up enough goodwill with me by that point that I didn't mind.
7. I watched it in IMAX 3D. While I'd like to watch people hitting eachother on a massive screen more often, I can do without the 3D and I'm starting to struggle to sit through a feature without adjusting my glasses. I thought they actually fogged up at various points. Do 3D glasses fog up? I googled this and got nothing, which suggests that I might actually be insane.
As an origin story, it's a promising start and I'd like to see more. It's also a much needed boost for DC after last years' lukewarm receptions for Batman vs Superman and in particular, Suicide Squad. Also Hollywood, please turn around another female fronted superhero film more quickly next time please thank you.
