Weigh In: Week 4

Starting Weight: 25 stone, 13 pounds.
Previous Weight: 24 stone 11 pounds.
New Weight: 24 stone. 7.6 pounds.
This Week's Loss: 3.4 pounds
Total Weight Loss: 1 stone, 5.4 pounds.

I am absolutely delighted with this, as again it wasn't a perfect week food wise. Can I have a perfect week food wise? Is that a realistic goal? I don't know. I'm still overeating but overeating better, if that makes sense. My cola addiction remains something of a concern. I drank nearly 2 litres of Pepsi Max on Thursday which is unacceptable really. I've accepted that I'm not likely to go cold turkey any time soon but need to start employing a good deal more willpower than I am at the moment. If I were to cut myself some slack, I would probably acknowledge that I'm not going to change a lifetime of poor eating habits in the space of a month and that there will be bumps in the road.

I have also exerted a bit more effort on the exercise front this week, going to the gym after work and racking up 21,744 steps on Tuesday and 18, 251 steps on Thursday. I'm a brief stroll away from 80,000 steps which is probably enough for one week. I flit between thinking I'm pushing myself too hard and thinking I'm not pushing myself hard enough. In one of my more manic moments this week, I contemplated trying to do 100k in steps. Which frankly would have been ludicrous. A more reasonable goal for the forthcoming week is to complete the next half stone loss. Fingers crossed.

I went to Bush Hall on Thursday see Kevin Devine play his "Brother's Blood" record in full to celebrate its 10th anniversary. I first saw him play at the short lived "Give It A Name" festival at Earls Court in 2007 and since then he's become one of my favourite singer-songwriters. His live shows are a joy, not only because of the full hearted, emotive performances of his songs (a typically hypnotic rendition of the album's title track and "It's Only Your Life"are the highlights tonight) but also because he's a genuinely charming, funny, self-effacing presence on stage. Devine is a class act in every sense of the term and if there were any justice he would be much more widely recognised. But as we are all aware, there is no justice. Nonetheless, I strongly recommend checking him out and "Brother's Blood" is a good a place as any to start.

What else happened? Oh yeah, we left the European Union. After 3 and a half years, I have reached the acceptance phase of grief concerning the matter. My opinion has not really changed in all of that time. I don't wish to paint everyone who voted leave as being ignorant, I accept that there are genuine misgivings about the operation of the EU and have some sympathy with the view that it's now time to move on.

But the central questions I had in 2016 have not been answered. What is the justification for doing this? What is the plan? Why will our lives be better? How will we cover any economic shortfall from our departure? I'm not an expert (famously, we've had enough of those) but the idea of major economic decisions concerning the future of our nation being made for emotional, illogical reasons continues to stick in the craw.

Our departure is a backwards looking, parochial move from those erroneously convinced of British exceptionalism. The people of this country have been conned by a group of charlatans who care not for this country or its citizens, but only for themselves. I genuinely hope that I'm wrong, but I still believe that all of us will be poorer as a consequence.
