Weigh In: Week 8
Starting Weight: 25 stone, 13 pounds.
This appears to be the whole "catching up with me" thing that I mentioned in the last blog. It was difficult to look at the scales on Saturday and be anything other than massively dispirited. I knew that I'd eaten too much in the previous week as I succumbed to Pancake Day amongst other things, but this was still a shock. I've fallen back into the trap of thinking I can eat whatever I want if I compensate with additional exercise and that simply isn't true. I've also fallen into the trap of believing that my Fitbit might give a reading that is even vaguely accurate in terms of calories burned. Naive to say to least.
Anyway, this is a wake up call. It seems clear to me that in the short term I need to focus on improving my diet and not on hitting the gym every other day. I'm just going to have to try and get back to basics this week, although I've got the potential pitfall of my birthday to negotiate. I'm hoping at least that a busy weekend* might restore some of my good time vibes, as I feel like I'm just going through the motions at the moment.
This weekend was largely uneventful, although I caught a preview of Onward. Ian Lightfoot (Tom Holland) is an elf who turns 16 and he and his brother Barley (Chris Pratt) are given a gift of a staff and a gem on behalf of their late father, along with an incantation that will bring him back to life. Predictably, things go awry and the two brothers must go on a quest together and rediscover the power of magic lost a long time ago. It's a hugely enjoyable adventure story with great chemistry between Holland and Pratt, in addition to a brilliant cameo from Octavia Spencer as Corey The Manticore, a mythical beast turned small business owner who provides a lot of laughs. It's not as ambitious as Pixar's best work but it's a touching portrait of the power of fraternal love. And yes, I got a little misty eyed.
It was preceded by The Simpsons short film 'Playdate With Destiny', confirming America's favourite family's assimilation into the House of Mouse. As with the previous short 'The Longest Daycare', it focuses on Maggie Simpson, who has always been a fine if underutilised source of silent comedy. I'm not going to make an argument for the continued existence of The Simpsons (limping into its 31st season) but as a long term fanatic, it's good to see them on the big screen again. It's not as strong as The Longest Daycare, but it's a nice aperitif.
*The Hold Steady are playing a trio of shows in London on the first weekend of March for the third year in a row. Long may it continue, I say.
