Weigh In: Week 9

Starting Weight: 25 stone, 13 pounds.

Previous Weight: 24 stone. 6.5 pounds.
New Weight: 24 stone, 3 pounds.
This Week's Loss: 3.5 pounds.
Total Weight Loss: 1 stone, 10 pounds.

It's good to have basically undone the previous week's damage, even if once again I am struggling to find an explanation. It was my birthday on Saturday and it was a little bit of an indulgent weekend on the food front so a negative outcome this week would not entirely surprise me but we'll see. I've basically accepted at this point that there will be fluctuations, but if I put more effort into moderating my intake rather than just saying that I'm going to do it, that would probably help. I've also taken a little break from the gym, which I feel has done me good, but I'm ready to get back into it now.

I've just about recovered from what was a particularly busy weekend. I celebrated my birthday with three consecutive gigs in three consecutive nights, via a trip to Banquet Records for one of their rare five pound vinyl sales and another trip to Flight Club with my friends Dasha, Joanna, Christine and Sophie. For the uninitiated, Flight Club is 'social darts', where you play a series of short form darts based games against oneanother. As it was International Women's Day on Sunday, I very sportingly agreed to lose to them all. I've been to Flight Club a few times over the past year or so and I haven't improved very much, although I did hit a couple of bullseyes. It can be sort of pricey (although more cost effective if there's a big group of you) but it's a lot of fun.

Friday night I went to Frank Turner at The Recreational, the new live music venue as part of the renovated Fairfield Halls in Croydon. I've now seen Frank so many times that I've run out of things to say (I think I am right in saying that my age is a smaller number than the number of Frank Turner shows I have seen)  but he always puts on a great show, with some pleasing diversions into more obscure territory in his back catalogue. On this occasion, he was ably supported by the heartfelt songs of Jess Guise and the withering capitalist critiques of Micah Schnabel. A great show in a great space and I can only echo Frank's hope that many more artists play Croydon in the future.

Saturday and Sunday saw back-to-back shows from The Hold Steady. The first, at the Electric Ballroom, was an almost flawless selection of the band's brilliant rock-n-roll hits. The second was a more intimate affair at Bush Hall, featuring deeper cuts from the band's discography. They remain one of my favourite live bands and a couple of hours in their company is an intoxicating pleasure. I can't think of a better way to see in my 32nd birthday. Still younger than Jesus. But for how much longer?
